Hi guys!!In the last post of "Fashion dictionary" we talked about punk style and with this post I'm going to continue with sub-cultures, this time is the turn of preppy!

Hola chic@s!! En el último post del "Diccionario de la moda" hablamos sobre el estilo punk y en este post seguiré con las sub-culturas, esta vez le toca al preppy!

What does it means preppy? Well, the word preppy derives from deluxe pre-college preparatoy or prep school that rich American child of the Northeastern states sometimes go to. In the 80's it was written a book about preppies ("Official Preppy Handbook"), the author was Lisa Birnbach and at first her objective was to poke fun at the rich lives of those American child, but finally the book glamorized that culture.

¿Qué quiere decir preppy? Pues bueno, la palabra deriva de los caros colegios preparatorios al college o prep school donde van algunas veces los niños ricos americanos de los estados del noreste. En los años 80 se escribió un libro sobre los preppies ("El manual oficial de los preppies"), su autora era Lisa Birnbach y al principio su objetivo era burlarse de las vidas de esos niños americanos, pero finalmente el libro glamurizó aquella cultura.

But the term of preppy is more used to refer to a fashion choice, rather than the preppy lifestyle. On the 80's the style preppy became very famous thanks to films like "Sixteen candles", "Pretty in Pink" and "The Breakfast Club". 

Pero el término preppy se usa más para referirse a una elección en lo que a moda se refiere, más que al estilo de vida preppy. En los años 80 el estilo preppy se hizo muy famoso gracias a películas como "Dieciseis velas", "La chica de rosa" y "El club de los cinco".

Do you know that Preppy Fashion started around 1912 to the last 40's and 50's as the Ivy League style of dress? The Ivy League was as style of men's dress very popular during the 50's represented by stores like J.Press or Books Brothers. So, in conclusion the Ivy League style was the predecessor of the preppy style.

¿Sabíais que el estilo preppy comenzo entre 1912 y los últimos años de los 40 y de los 50 como el estilo de vestir del Ivy League? El Ivy League era un estilo de vestir de los hombres muy famoso durante los años 50, representado por marcas como J.Press o Books Brothers. En conclusión, el estilo Ivy League fue el "padre" del estilo preppy.

The preppy style also reflects the American upper class leisure activities: golf, lacrosse, equestrianism, sailing, hunting, tennis, rugby... That's why in Tommy Hilfiger or Ralph Lauren campaigns (the preppy brands with Lacoste and Lily Pulitzer) we always see young boys and girls playing rugby, lacrosse or equestrianism

El estilo preppy también refleja las actividades de ocio de la clase alta americana: el golf, el lacrosse, montar a caballo, hacer vela, el tenis, el rugby, la caza... Esa es la razón por la cual en las campañas de Tommy Hilfiger o Ralph Lauren  (las marcas preppy por excelencia junto a Lacoste y Lily Pulitzer) siempre vemos a chicos y chicas jovenes jugando a rugby, lacrosse o montando a caballo.

Holidays in Palm Beach (California) made popular by the East Coast upper class led to the emergence of bright colours combinations as one of the characteristics of the preppy style. By the 80's Lacoste started to be considered as another preppy brand.

Las vacaciones en Palm Beach (California) que se hicieron populares gracias a la clase alta de la costa este condujeron al surgimiento de la combinación de colores claros como una de las características del estilo preppy. En torno a los años 80 Lacoste comenzó a ser considerada como otra marca preppy.

Some preppy icons during the XXth century were: Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly or Jackie Kennedy Onassis.

Today, the preppy is still alive and if you like you can get inspired on famous people as Alexa Chung, Taylor Swift, Zoey Deschanel, Olivia Palermo or the duchess Kate Middleton and above everything I advise you to watch (again) all the Gossip Girl series to see the preppy outfits of our dear Blair.

Hoy por hoy, el preppy sigue vivo y si os gusta os podéis inspirar en celebrities como Alexa Chung, Taylor Swift, Zoey Deschanel, Olivia Palermo o la duquesa Kate Middleton y sobretodo os aconsejo mirar (otra vez) la serie Gossip Girl para ver todos los outfits tan preppies de nuestra querida Blair.

A blazer (preferably dark blue)

Un blazer (americana, preferiblemente azul oscura)

A pair of oxford shoes

A polo shirt:
