In the ELLE issue of this month, I've read a very interesting article about "las alpargatas" or "espadrilles" and their origines which lied on the Castañer family, that I've liked a lot and which I would like to share with you.

En la revista ELLE de este mes, he leído un artículo muy interesante de "las alpargatas" o "espardeñas" y sus orígenes que residen en la familia Castañer, me ha gustado mucho y me gustría compartirlo con vosotros.

Alpargatas exist from more than 200 years, but it was a catalan document to describe for the first time the espadrilles and to call them "espardenyes". Lorenzo Castañer started to made them in his little village (Bañolas) in Catalonia, after the Civil War the factory was very affected until a french man saw the simple shoes and proposed them to made them with flowers fabric. Castañer made a model with cretonne which delighted this french man who said to the family to go to Paris and present it in a exposition.

Las alpargatas existen desde hace más de 200 años, pero fue un documento catalán que describió por primera vez las espadrillas, llamandola "espardenyes". Lorenzo Castañer comenzó a hacerlas en su pequeño pueblo (Bañolas) de Cataluña, después de la Guerra Civil la fábrica estaba muy afectada hasta que un francés vió los sencillos zapatos y les propusó de hacerlas con tela de flores. Castañer hizó un modelo con cretona que conquistó al francés quien propusó a la familia ir a Paris para presentarlas en una exposición.

Like something that would had been the firsts "espardenyes".

It was 1970 and in Paris Yves Saint Laurent saw the shoes and designed an alpargata with wedge heeled. The Castañer got make it and since that all the world talked about the espadrilles. Today Hermès, Louis Vuitton, Loewe or Chanel have put the espadrilles in theirs collections of this year.

Era el año 1970 y en Paris Yves Saint Laurent vió los zapatos, poco después diseñó una alpargata con el tacón de cuña. Los Castañer consiguieron hacerlas y desde entonces todo el mundo hablaba de las espadrillas. Hoy Hermès, Louis Vuitton, Loewe o Chanel han incluido las alpargatas en sus colecciones de este año.
